- Plant – What person did you meet at Drake that had the biggest impact on your life, and what would you say to them today to thank them?
The person that I met at Drake that had the biggest influence on my life was Dominic Johnson. Dom was a senior when I was a first-year and he was influential for a few reasons, first was that he convinced me to look at Drake – I am glad I did because I fell in love with the school immediately. Second, he convinced me to rush the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi, which was one of the best decisions I made in my college career. I would say to him, thank you for the non-stop pestering to look at Drake and to rush AKPsi. I don’t know what path my life would be in today without them, and I’m incredibly lucky that it took me the way it did. And I owe that to you, Dom. So thank you. Truly.
- Nourish – What were you involved in at Drake that had the biggest impact on your life, and how did it help you grow and develop into who you are today?
I was involved in Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi), Student Alumni Association (SAA), I went to Uganda for May Term in 2014 and I delivered mail on campus with the Postal Operations team for four years. All of these experience hold a special place in my heart – AKPsi gave me brothers for life; SAA introduced me to incredible alumni and students, alike; traveling to Uganda was a life changing adventure and gave me friendships across the ocean; and delivering mail brought me in touch with some of Drake’s incredible faculty and staff I would not have met otherwise. I feel like these four experience are so much a part of who I am today and I would not be who I am now without them. I learned a lot about myself, others, and the world around us through these experiences and I feel honored to have had them.
- Flourish – What is something that you’ve always dreamed of accomplishing and were able to accomplish as a result of your Drake experience, and how did your Drake experience prepare you/help you do that?
I just earned my alumnus title in May, so I’m still a new to this, but one thing I have always dreamed of accomplishing was to win an award in marketing or public relations (those were my majors). I was able to accomplish this because of my Drake experience thanks to the senior public relations capstone. For capstone, we had to create a PR plan for the city of Manning, Iowa. For an entire year we worked on it in two sections, the first was on research and the second was on putting everything together into a plan. It was tough, challenging but incredibly rewarding. This October, my capstone team, Agency 141, won an award at the Central Iowa PRSA’s PRIME Awards. We were awarded the Community Champion Merit Award for our work for “Putting Manning on the Map.”
