Nicholas Bianchina is a senior BCMB major and the president of Drake’s Alpha Tau Omega Chapter.
This summer I have had the opportunity to be at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado working with the University of Colorado Cancer Institute. My research is investigating biomarker possibilities of urine for prostate cancer detection. The best part about this opportunity is learning just how much Drake has prepared me for this experience. I have had incredible faculty at Drake that have taught me within this subject matter and developed my critical thinking skills. The research experience that I have gained at Drake University in Dr. Buising’s lab has enabled me to already understand the scientific investigation process and data manipulation.
I heard about this opportunity in Colorado from both my advisor at Drake and recent Drake graduate, Cole Schwartz. I saw him on the OnPaintedStreet Instagram account this past summer at the same medical campus and thought it presented a unique opportunity. Once I received the internship, I emailed him to ask him more and he provided some valuable insight into the experience and his growth throughout the summer. He confirmed that this was definitely something I should pursue, even though moving across the country was a bit nerve racking.
The skills and expertise I have garnered at Drake have been a part of my everyday experience here in Colorado this summer. I was actually out on a hike this past weekend in Aspen – while I was walking, I spotted a hat on the road and picked it up. Turns out it was a hat for the HyVee Triathalon in Des Moines, Iowa from 2007! This has reinforced that Drake University has arms reaching out far and wide and I cannot wait to be connected into this alumni network after I graduate this May!
