When we talk about building a culture of philanthropy, we are talking about an appreciation of monetary support, an understanding of the need for that support, and a consistent, purposeful action that follows that understanding.
It’s not just about the amount a person gives or putting your name on a classroom in a new building on campus. Giving to Drake, at any level, is vital to creating the Drake experience for each and every student. Without donors, classrooms would lack supplies and updated technology and campus would lack faculty brought in by endowed professorships and scholarship support. The Student Alumni Association is charged with instilling this culture of philanthropy through both students and alumni. Our purposeful action that follows this understanding of institutional philanthropy takes form in a two-part Philanthropy Week program: I Heart Drake Week and All-In. I Heart Drake Week is a time for students to intentionally reflect on their Drake experience, rekindling the love they felt when they first applied and recognizing the people and experiences that have made their Drake experience so meaningful. I Heart Drake Week 2017, themed “past, present, future,” focused this love of Drake toward generations of Drake alumni, current students, and reaching out to prospective students via a letter writing event that encouraged current students to share what they love about Drake with those prospective students touring our campus. Spring 2017 marked the first year of Drake’s Student Alumni Association partnering with University Advancements with the goal of engaging and encouraging students to participate and give back to Drake during a week previously aimed toward alumni, faculty, and staff. Over a 24-hour period, students, alumni, staff, and faculty alike are asked to give what they can. And with several other fun activities planned throughout the day, students on campus were introduced to the power and of the importance of giving back to their institution. Keep checking back for more details on how you can donate or be involved with All-In 2018!
In addition to these efforts, we are continually looking for ways to help the greater Des Moines community through programs such as Halloween Hoops and other service-driven opportunities. Halloween Hoops provides a trick-or-treating and games opportunity for underserved families in the area. If you bring a philanthropic or service-driven cause that you care about to SAA, we want to help you make it happen.
